NDT Facilitation
Sometimes your brain needs to be trained or retrained. We can help.
NDT stands for Neuro-Developmental Treatment, which is an approach used by occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists to address movement and functional challenges in individuals with neurological impairments, such as cerebral palsy, stroke, or traumatic brain injury. NDT focuses on facilitating normal movement patterns and postures through guided handling techniques, therapeutic activities, and environmental modifications.
Neurological interventions encompass a range of techniques and strategies aimed at improving neurological function and addressing challenges related to movement, coordination, sensory processing, and cognition. These interventions may include sensory integration therapy, reflex integration, motor learning approaches, constraint-induced movement therapy, and cognitive rehabilitation, among others.
Occupational therapists (OTs) play a crucial role in helping individuals with neurological impairments through various interventions:
1. Assessment: OTs conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the individual's strengths, challenges, and goals. They assess sensory processing, motor skills, cognitive abilities, functional independence, and environmental factors that may impact participation in daily activities.
2. Treatment Planning: Based on assessment findings and individual goals, OTs develop customized treatment plans focusing on improving functional abilities and promoting independence. Treatment plans may include a combination of therapeutic activities, adaptive strategies, and environmental modifications.
3. Sensory Integration Therapy: OTs trained in sensory integration theory and techniques use sensory-rich activities to help individuals regulate their responses to sensory input and improve participation in daily tasks. This may involve activities such as swinging, jumping, brushing, and deep pressure input.
4. Motor Learning: OTs utilize principles of motor learning to help individuals acquire and refine motor skills. This may involve task-specific practice, feedback, repetition, and gradual progression of difficulty to promote skill acquisition and retention.
5. Environmental Modifications: OTs assess the individual's home, school, work, or community environments to identify barriers to participation and recommend modifications to promote accessibility and safety. This may include recommending adaptive equipment, assistive technology, or changes in environmental layout.
6. Education and Training: OTs provide education and training to individuals, families, caregivers, and other team members on strategies to support functional independence, optimize participation, and prevent secondary complications.
We have worked with a wide variety of neurological diagnoses utilizing NDT facilitation techniques. We are trained in the application of handling skills to promote successful movement patterns during play and self-care. We use equipment such as physioballs, bolsters, and wedges to assist with NDT facilitation during sessions. We apply the principles of Dynamic Systems and Motor Learning during sessions to ensure the use of evidence-based practice. OTs play a critical role in supporting individuals with neurological impairments by addressing their unique needs, promoting skill development, enhancing quality of life, and maximizing participation in meaningful activities.
